Music videos are an art form. They allow artists to dig in and experiment with new ideas. They can be a test lab. A journey. Destination TBD.
I look at the process from the perspective of a performance artist who captures another performance artist inside of a performance of art in order to reflect on the nature of art or the other way around (to reflect on performance).
My experimental side allows me to use music video projects to express ideas I can’t do in quite the same way anywhere else. It’s also a merging with the vision of another artist (s) than can function like a random possibility generator. Mind melding at it’s best.
Artists who work together should have an overlapping vision and a creative practice. But sometimes they don’t and it still works.
The magic ingredient is a willingness to leave ones ego at the door and bring a beginners mind-set.
Are music videos a marketing tool? Are they just about getting more people to hear your music so you can get more downloads?
Of course, those things are true and valid, but if they are your ONLY intentions you’ll end up with a lifeless music video.
